welcome to the world as seen through my eyes
My name is Pam. I am a quarterhorse and I won lots of ribbons with my person showing in western pleasure classes. They were very proud of me. Then I moved to two more farms and my people showed me and trail rode me. Life was good; I had lots of pasture mates and good hay and treats. But then I was moved to another farm. My feet grew long and I tripped a lot. My teeth grew lots of hooks which cut my mouth and I could not chew well. My skin was itching from bug bites. I was hungry but I could not eat; it hurt too much. I was itchy and my hair fell out. My feet were sore and cracked. I did not have any energy. It was best to hang my head low and move as little as possible. One day some people came by and talked and looked at me, then they took me to another barn. A dentist came and fixed my teeth and oh, it was so nice to be able to chew without pain. In a few months I gained over three hundred pounds - almost back to my weight when I was a show horse. These people fixed my feet and my hair grew back, and then guess what happened? One of my people who used to show me found me again. Oh was I happy.

My name is Momma. I am a 13 year old Appendix. I had a few very nice owners who rode me and took good care of me. A couple years ago I was moved to a place where they did not feed me much and they didn’t pay much attention to me. I was scared a lot and often ran wildly. One time I smashed into a fence with my hip; oh did that hurt, but the people did not help. Then the people started packing up their things. One night they lead me out into the street and let me go. I ran off into the woods and the car lights and noises scared me a lot. For a long time nobody helped me. Every time I thought I was safe and could take a few bites of grass something else happened and I had to run off. I was so hungry and my hip hurt and the bugs were making me very itchy. I got my tail caught on a fence and had to rip it out to get away. Then the bugs were worse. Then a truck started following me, chasing me even. I ran and wildly ran, but finally they caught me and put me in the truck. I was so scared I could barely open my eyes. I tried to kick and bite them, but they got me into the truck, with two other horses in there also. All of us were so scared. But then they took us to a barn where there were many other horses and lots of nice pasture. I was still so scared I could barely open my eyes and I wanted to kick anyone who got near me. That was back in September of 2007. I have gained a couple hundred pounds since then and I can let them brush me and work on my feet....yes I am remembering how it was many years ago, but I still won’t let them give me a bath!

My name is Jimmy and I am a standardbred and I am 17 years old. I used to race at the harness races and I loved to run really fast. Sometimes my legs would hurt, but they would give me medicine that would make it not hurt. But then my legs got really stiff and very straight. Maybe they gave me too much medicine. I could not run at all any more and I could barely walk. I could not lie down anymore, and then they took me to a different place to live....in a field all by myself. I was very lonely. My feet grew long and cracked; my coat got very itchy; it hurt my mouth to eat so I didn’t eat much.
A long time passed then some people came and put me in a truck and took me to a nice barn with other horses. They fixed my feet and my teeth and gave me special food. I gained some weight and I was so happy to have some friends. Then they moved me again and people have been really nice to me here. This is my favorite place since I back when used to be able to run so fast, but I cannot run anymore at all now. But I love to be with my favorite buddy here.
