REC Program

To prepare our horses for successful adoption into new homes, we host Rehabilitation and Exercise Clinics (REC).  Our goal is to have the horse solidly learn those skills that will make them most adoptable.  The horse needs to perform each of the assigned tasks solidly with multiple volunteers before our REC coordinator will pass them on that particular task.  The REC clinics also allow us to teach our volunteers about the physical restoration and rehabilitation of rescue horses and  also how to resolve behavioral issues and develop new, positive patterns of behavior.  Clinics are typically held the first Saturday of each month with follow-up sessions each Wednesday.

Each horse in the ERAF barn is assigned to a specific Assistant Trainer who learns about the horse and is responsible for the horse's progress through the rehabilitation program.  He/she  works directly with a REC Trainer or the REC Coordinator via weekly group lessons. The Assistant Trainer is then responsible for teaching Student Volunteers about the horse's current exercise program.

New or “limited time” volunteers must attend a REC clinic or group lesson at least 6 times per year so that the REC Coordinator or REC Trainer may personally assess their handling of the horse.

Participation in the REC program is free for volunteers, but space is limited.  For more information, either call the ERAF office at (772)220-0150 or email our REC Coordinator at kirsten@wexfordfarm.com
