History

ERAF was founded in the year 2000 to meet the needs of ever increasing numbers of neglected, abused or unwanted horses and to find them new, loving, “forever” homes. We receive horses from varied sources, ranging from Animal Care and Control to private homes and show barns. We provide needed medical care and training while we begin to match horses to new adoptive families.

When we started ERAF, we placed “our horses” in varied foster homes who were willing to care for the horses until more permanent homes could be found. In 2005 we began leasing a barn and property from the Pegasus Foundation in Palm City. This has allowed us to house the horses together and to pursue various needed training and rehabilitation efforts more intensely and effectively. Additionally, when our horses go to an adoptive family, the horse(s) can always be returned if things do not work as hoped. In that way we guarantee our adoptions as well as a safe and caring home for our horses.  Over the past 9 years, we have found new homes for over 90 horses.  We continue to follow up with each of the horses in their new homes to ensure a successful partnership in their new homes.

In conjunction with our rescue and adoption programs we offer educational seminars on horse care and training through our Rehabilitation and Education Committee Program (REC). We hope that through education we can prevent some horses from ever entering programs like ours.

We are one of only six Florida rescues to be listed in the American Horse Protection Associations' Section One for the 2010 listing of Equine Rescue Organizations.  (Click here for the report.)  To be provided in Section One, ERAF provided AHPA with detailed information regaring our facilities and programs.

Our offices are in Jupiter, and our barn is located in Martin County. We serve the counties of Palm Beach, Martin and Okeechobee.  We are a not for profit, 501(c)3 tax exempt foundation.
